Everything you need to know about how Alma works.
What happens if I miss a check-in?
If you miss a check-in, your emergency contacts are immediately notified through the Alma app, or via WhatsApp, Telegram, or email if they don't use Alma. If you've enabled it, the alert can also include your last known location and stored health information, so your contacts know how to help.
Do my emergency contacts also get practical information, like where the spare key is?
Yes. Under Emergency Information you can note what matters in an emergency: where a spare key is, pets that need care, medication, allergies, conditions, blood type and any other notes, such as the phone number of your doctor's practice. If you miss a check-in, your emergency contacts receive this information together with your address, if you've added it: in the alert in the Alma app, directly in the email, or on WhatsApp and Telegram through the link in the message.
Do my emergency contacts need the app?
No. Emergency contacts can receive alerts via WhatsApp, Telegram, or email without installing anything. If they want to see your updates, they can join Alma using the free version.
What if my phone is off or has no signal?
Alma uses cloud-based monitoring. Your check-in schedule is stored securely, so the system detects a missed check-in even if your phone is off, out of battery, or has no signal.
Can I set up Alma for a parent or grandparent?
Yes. Once you accept their invitation as an emergency contact, you can set up their check-in times, emergency contacts, and emergency info from your own phone. They only need to confirm they are okay once a day.
Does Alma track my location all the time?
No. Alma does not use continuous tracking. If you enable location sharing in Safety Net, only your last known location is stored and shared with your contacts if you miss a check-in.
Is my data safe?
Yes. All data is encrypted, stored in Germany, and handled in compliance with GDPR. Alma does not show ads and does not sell your data.
Can I use Alma as a safety app for walking alone?
Yes. Before you set off walking, commuting, or heading out at night, you can start a check-in for the time you expect to be back. If you do not check in by then, your emergency contacts are notified and can see your last known location. There is nothing to do in the moment and no one to call.
Does Alma work offline for solo hiking?
Yes. Your check-in schedule runs in the cloud, so a missed check-in is detected even with no signal on the trail. If you lose coverage, your contacts are alerted as soon as a connection returns, along with your last known location. That makes it a practical safety app for solo hikers and remote routes.
Can Alma check on an elderly parent every day?
Yes. You can set up Alma for a parent or grandparent in a few minutes and choose a daily check-in time that suits them. If they miss it, you are notified. It is a calm way to know they are safe each day without phoning every morning or making them feel watched.
Can I use Alma if I work alone?
Many people who work alone use Alma as a simple safety net. You can set a check-in for the end of a shift or a task done by yourself. If you do not check in, the contacts you choose are notified with your last known location.
How do I cancel?
You can start with a 14-day free trial of Safety Net. You can cancel anytime through the App Store or Google Play. You will keep access to the free Emergency Contact Mode.
